Recreational Shrimping with Dip nets
Shrimping in Florida is great all over, The most popular Hot Spots are in Mosquito Lagoon are which is located in the northern part of the Indian River Lagoon system and the Atlantic Intercostal Waterway. It extends from Ponce de León Inlet in Volusia County, Florida, to the north end of Merritt Island. It connects to the Indian River via the Haulover Canal.
The Lagoon divides the city of New Smyrna Beach. It also runs next to (CNS) the Canaveral National Seashore on Cape Canaveral and the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. The Kennedy Space Center is located on the lagoon as well. Mosquito Lagoon is an acclaimed for their world famous Large Florida Shrimp, and Red Drum fishing habitats
Recreational shrimper’s can use dip nets, traps, cast nets, frame nets, Nets that open with the flow of the current.
Shrimping is a mostly a night time activity so you will need lights or Shrimp bait, submersible GREEN lights works best as it illuminates the shrimp that come swimming by, so that you may see them swimming by and over the lights.
Shrimping can be done from boats, seawalls, or bridges piers, docks etc… The tides can be crucial, and the out going tide works best.
Recreational bag limits here in Florida are 5 gallons, check with your local regulations.
